Authority in the Country and Workplace

In a country:
GOVERNMENT
CITIZEN

3 truths regrading the authority structure in the country:

1) The Government of our country is established by God
Romans 13:1 "Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorites, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

Even Hitler's government was established by God. Without him, there would not have been an Israel today.

2) We must submit to the governing authorities of our country with the correct attitude.
Titus 3:1 "Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good"

Daniel 3:16 - How Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego submitted to Nebuchadnezzar with the correct attitude even though they had different opinions.

3) We must obey the laws of the country.
God will always respect the laws of a country as long as they do not violate the laws of God.
Luke 20:22-25 "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's."

1 Timothy 2:1-2 "I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness."

Proverbs 21:1 "The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases.

In the workplace:
EMPLOYER
EMPLOYEE

2 important things to note as employers

1) Your contract with your employee must follow the laws of the country

2) You must pay your employees their wages and on time.
James 5:1 "Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you."
James 5:4 "Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty."

Deuteronomy 24:15 "Pay him his wages each day before sunset, because he is poor and is counting on it. Otherwise he may cry to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin.

Colossians 3:22-23 "Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favour, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the LORD. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the LORD, not for men"

Authority in the Family

In a Family:
HUSBAND/FATHER
WIFE/MOTHER
CHILDREN

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HUSBANDS AND WIVES:

AS HUSBANDS:

1) Ephesians 5:23a
"For the husband is the head of the wife."

2) Ephesians 5:25-27
"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up..."

AS WIVES:

3) Ephesians 5:22
"Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord."
-it is when the wives have different opinions from the husbands and the wives listen to the husband's opinion, that's called submission.
-when wives submit to their husbands, they are also submitting to God

4) 1 Peter 3:1
"Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands..."

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PARENTS AND CHILDREN:

AS CHILDREN:

5) Ephesians 6:1-3
"1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.-unmarried children
2 'Honour your father and mother'-which is the first commandment with a promise,-married children
3 that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."

AS PARENTS:

How should parents use the authority that God has given them over their children?
[1] Bless and encourage our children
-Romans 12:14b-15
"Bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn."
-Proverbs 18:21a
"The tongue has the power of life and death."

[2] Help your child to know God
-Proverbs 22:6
"Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it."
-Matthew 6:33
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
if we seek Him first, we will be very successful in life.

5) Psalms 68:5
"A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling."
-God will be the head of the household if the husbands pass away/ divorced, etc.

6) 1 Timothy 5:16
-God loves everyone in the world; but especially those who need Him. (widows, orphans etc.)

7) Psalms 128:1-2, 3-4
"Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in his ways. You will eat the fruit of your labour; blessings and prosperity will be yours..."

-When God calls us to do something, do we follow His command, or do we run away? 违命/听命?

1) 面对感动 (1:3, 3:3)
-the move from God (we need to have humility, obedience, submission)
起来/逃避? - God wants us to rise up for His glory from critical situations.

2) 面对风浪 (:6)
-God will test us by giving us problems and placing us in diffficult situations, so as to test our faith and hope in Him.

3) 面对面子 (1:10-11, 4:9)
-God wants us to have humility, taking away all our pride.
esp. when we are in the wrong, we should have the courage to apologise; "say sorry" and ask for forgiveness.

4) 面对环境 (2:2, 4, 7, 9)
"...生死关头要抓紧上帝不放..."

5) 面对怒气 (4:1, 4)
-similar to that of '面对面子'

6) 面对管教 (4:6-8, 10-11)
-be humble and willing to learn

-Apart from heterosexual, the rest are shameful lusts, sin is a sin.

Church Authority

1) Ephesians 5:23b-24a
"Christ is the head of the church..."
-we must submit and obey Him 100%

In a church:
1st: Jesus Christ
2nd: Pastors/Leaders - shepherds
3rd: Members - sheep

2) 1 Timothy 5:17
"The elders(including Pastor, leaders, deacons) who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honour..."
-especially the Pastor (all these 'roles' are established by God; if we obey them, we are also obeying God)

What does the bible use to describe the authority structure of the church?
The relationship between a shepherd and his sheep.

3) John 10:14

4) Acts 20:28b
pastors and leaders are the SHEPHERD
members are the SHEEP
* a shepherd in the life of a sheep is very important (the shepherd helps to lead and guide the sheep)

5) Ezekiel 34:2b-3

How do we know who the right shepherd is?
You must know/recognise his voice.

6) John 10:2-5
"The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep..."
-"by the gate" means 'through Jesus Christ'

7) Hebrews 13:17
"Obey your leaders and submit to their authority"

Why is it important to submit to authority in the church?
1. We receive the blessings of God
Matthew 10:40-41
-we will be rewarded if we obey & submit to our elders or leaders

2. Our hearts will be open to receive instructions and guidance
2 Corinthians 6:11-13
-we should not let our minds be 'poisoned' with gossip/slender/bad things; but instead, we should protect our hearts and our minds.

3. You give them the courage and joy to serve
